The Lake Maitland Residence was conceived as a sequence of shaded rooms opening gradually toward the water. Deep eaves and a cypress screen temper the western light; inside, the plan steps down with the site until the living room floor sits a hand's width above the lake.
The lake was
always the client.
Every decision, from the depth of the eaves to the grain direction of the decking, was tested against one question: does it make the water feel closer?

The house descends with the land in three half-levels. Each threshold is marked by a change in material underfoot: honed limestone at the entry, white oak through the living rooms, and finally cypress on the terrace, where the boards run straight toward the lake.
Pecky cypress
Milled from Florida cypress and left unfinished, the screen will silver within two summers, settling the house into its bank of live oaks.
